Mincy Media logo-tagAn acquaintance of mine, Dave Mincy, has recently begun offering up a new series of arrangements on his site mincymedia.com. If you visit his blog now, you’ll find new sacred arrangements meant for student pianists. My wife got me a gift for Christmas that is probably not high on a list for most people in my age bracket: a pro-grade Yomega yo-yo. Specifically, it’s the Yomega Maverick, an aluminum yo-yo with a ball bearing hub. No doubt, some of you, like me, are marvelling that a “toy” of such quality and engineering even exists. I was somewhat surprised to learn that there are international yo-yo competitions, and although a niche, yo-yoing is still very much alive and well in certain circles. Take a look at the video below for an example of some of the skills required to compete in a yo-yo tournament. Excuse the soundtrack. (more…)

Raising Cain book coverI’m always on the lookout for information that will help me as I try to teach piano more effectively to boys.  My wife recently received several parenting books that were specifically written for training boys and girls.  The first one that I read was a “boy” book entitled Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys.  Written by two child psychologists, Dan Kindlon, PH.D. and Michael Thompson, PH.D,. Raising Cain gives a clinical and personal perspective on what it means to help boys understand and accept their inner emotional self.  Before you write this book off as psycho-babble or worldly mumbo-jumbo, take some time to read one Christian dad and piano teacher’s take on it.  You might be surprised what I learned. Tom Gerou headshotYesterday I attended a workshop sponsored by the Alfred Publishing Company at Bill Jones Music in Knoxville.  The clinician was Tom Gerou who is Alfred’s Vice President of Production and Director of Keyboard Operations.  It was mostly a “sales pitch” which I kind of expected, but I went because it was free and thought that I could learn a few things about teaching as well as the teaching environment in the Knoxville area.
